From a middle-class immigrant family in Pennsylvania to Congress, Ro Khanna’s journey is one of perseverance, public service, and belief in America’s promise.
Philadelphia to a middle-class immigrant family
Ro's belief in America comes from his lived experience. His grandfather spent four years in jail as part of Gandhi's independence movement, which influenced Dr. King and led to the 1965 Immigration Act. That paved the way for his parents to come to America. When they came, America was on the march—brimming with new industry, movements for social justice, and economic possibility.
Raised in Bucks County, PA.
Thanks to good public schools and a tight-knit community, Ro grew up believing anything was possible. His dad was a chemical engineer, his mom a substitute teacher assistant for children with special needs. Both instilled a belief in hard work and public service.
Earned degrees in economics and law
As an economics undergrad at the University of Chicago, Ro volunteered for a little-known State Senate candidate named Barack Obama. After Yale Law School, he would later work on Obama's 2008 presidential campaign before being appointed to serve as Deputy Assistant Secretary at the U.S. Department of Commerce by the newly elected President Obama.
Moved to Silicon Valley
Drawn by tech's potential to shape the future, Ro arrived with little money and no connections. He ran twice for Congress and lost. Despite the setbacks, he loved teaching economics at Stanford as a lecturer.
Elected to Congress on his third run
Despite not having a famous name or any ties to the California establishment, Ro was elected as a progressive reformer to represent Silicon Valley. An Indian American of Hindu faith, he represents today the engine of technology innovation for America and the world.
